One thing nobody tells you about losing your appetite on a GLP-1 medication is that your sweet tooth doesn’t always go with it.
Some days I don’t want a full meal, but I still want something, and for a long time my go-to was just… not eating dessert at all.
Then I finally caved and got a Ninja Creami after watching what felt like a hundred protein ice cream videos, and it’s honestly changed how I think about dessert on this journey.
This vanilla version is the one I make most often. It’s simple, it’s the base I build other flavors from, and it genuinely tastes like real ice cream — not a sad protein-shake version of it.
Why This Protein Ice Cream Is Great for GLP-1 Users
I know everyone’s tummy is different on this medication, but I’ve found it sits really well with me, even the day after my shot. Honestly, this dreamy creamy ice cream has become one of my favorite ways to end the day because it’s:
- High in protein (24 to 30g), so it counts toward your goals instead of working against them
- REALLY low in calories – only about 180 calories per serving!
- Low in added sugar compared to regular ice cream
- Genuinely satisfying, so a small portion actually feels like enough
- Easy to customize once you have the base recipe down
- Freezer-stable, so you always have something ready when a craving hits
My Favorite Trick…
I make a double batch of the base at once and freeze it in two separate containers, so I always have a backup ready to spin without mixing a new batch from scratch every time.
If You’re Struggling With Cravings on GLP-1…
Losing your appetite for meals doesn’t always mean losing your interest in dessert, and I think that surprises a lot of people. It surprised me.
Instead of white-knuckling through a craving or feeling guilty about wanting something sweet, I’ve found it’s a lot easier to just have a better option ready to go. This base recipe has become exactly that for me — something I can reach for without it feeling like a setback.
If cravings and “food noise” have been a bigger struggle for you than actual hunger, you’re not alone in that either.
Vanilla Protein Ninja Creami Recipe
A creamy, low-sugar vanilla protein “ice cream” made in the Ninja Creami. This is my go-to base recipe — simple enough for every day, and easy to build other flavors from.
Estimated Nutrition (Per Serving, makes 2 servings):
Calories: ~180 | Protein: 24–26g | Fiber: 0–1g | Carbs: 10g | Fat: 3g
(Varies depending on protein powder and milk used.)
Equipment
- Ninja Creami
- Ninja Creami Deluxe/XL
- Freezer Bowl Style Ice Cream Maker (jump below to see a few tips and tweaks to the original recipe)
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsweetened almond milk (or milk of choice)
- 1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1 scoop vanilla protein powder
- 1 tbsp granulated sweetener of choice (monk fruit, allulose, or sugar)
- 1/4 tsp xanthan gum (optional, for extra creaminess)
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
Wondering why I use Greek yogurt and milk together?
Straight protein shake bases can freeze up icy and hard. Adding Greek yogurt gives the base more fat and body, so it spins into something closer to real soft-serve texture instead of a block of flavored ice.
Optional Add-Ins
- Crushed sugar-free cookies (I’m slightly obsessed with these cookies)
- A swirl of peanut butter
- Fresh berries mixed in after spinning
- A drizzle of sugar-free caramel or chocolate syrup
Instructions
Step 1: Blend the Base
Add almond milk, Greek yogurt, protein powder, sweetener, xanthan gum, vanilla extract, and salt to a blender. Blend until completely smooth.
Step 2: Freeze
Pour the mixture into your Ninja Creami pint container and freeze flat for at least 24 hours.
Step 3: Spin
Remove the frozen pint, place it in the Ninja Creami, and run it on the “Lite Ice Cream” or “Protein” setting (depending on your model). If the mixture looks crumbly after the first spin, re-spin once more until smooth.
Step 4: Add Mix-Ins (Optional)
If adding mix-ins, use the “Mix-In” function to fold them in after the base has spun smooth.
Step 5: Serve
Scoop and serve immediately for the best soft-serve texture.
Optional Protein Boost
Want to push this over 30g of protein per serving? Use a full scoop and a half of protein powder, or add an extra tablespoon of Greek yogurt to the base.
A Few Easy Tweaks
- Swap almond milk for Fairlife milk for an even creamier, higher-protein base
- No xanthan gum? It’s optional, but it does help prevent iciness
- Make it dairy-free by using a dairy-free yogurt alternative
- Turn this into a flavor base for chocolate, cookies and cream, or peanut butter versions by adjusting the mix-ins
Don’t Have a Ninja Creami? You Can Use a Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker Instead
No Creami? No problem. This base protein ice cream recipe works like a charm in any freezer-bowl style ice cream maker like the Cuisinart. The overall process is actually one step simpler:
- Make sure your Cuisinart freezer bowl has been in the freezer for at least 16–24 hours ahead of time.
- Blend the base exactly as written above — no need to freeze it first.
- Pour the liquid base directly into the frozen bowl and churn according to your machine’s instructions, usually 20–25 minutes, until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.
- Enjoy immediately as soft-serve, or transfer to a freezer-safe container and freeze for 2+ hours for a firmer, scoopable texture.
You’ll skip the 24-hour freeze-then-spin step entirely — the Cuisinart churns and freezes at the same time, so it’s actually a faster route to the same result.
Hope this becomes your new favorite way to satisfy a sweet tooth without feeling like you’re off track.
