I’ve talked before about how fiber became non-negotiable for me once I understood how common constipation is on GLP-1 medications.
These chocolate chia protein balls came out of wanting something I could grab on my way out the door that was actually doing something for me, instead of just being a convenient snack.
Chia seeds are the real workhorse here. They form a gel when they absorb liquid, which is part of what makes them so effective for fiber and for keeping you feeling full — and rolled oats add even more fiber on top of that, so these end up being a genuinely high-fiber snack, not just a “has some chia in it” snack.
What Makes These Chocolate Protein Balls with Chia Seeds Different
A few things set these apart from a typical no-bake protein ball:
- High in fiber from both the chia seeds and rolled oats
- No-bake and no-cook, so they come together in one bowl with about 10 minutes of hands-on time and no oven required
- Easy to make gluten-free by using certified gluten-free rolled oats
- Easy to eat in one or two bites if your appetite is low
- Freezer-friendly, so a batch lasts for weeks
- Naturally sweetened, with no refined sugar needed beyond a little honey
My Favorite Trick
I let the mixture rest in the fridge for at least 15 minutes before rolling it into balls. Straight out of the bowl, it’s too sticky to work with easily. A short chill firms everything up just enough to roll cleanly without it sticking to your hands.
Why I Use Almond Butter Instead of Peanut Butter
Either works here, but I specifically look for a natural almond butter with just almonds on the label, no added oils or sugar. It gives these a slightly less heavy flavor than peanut butter and lets the cacao and vanilla come through more, rather than the peanut butter flavor taking over.
Fiber, Constipation, and GLP-1 Medications
If constipation or bloating has been part of your experience on Ozempic, Wegovy, Zepbound, or Mounjaro, you’re far from alone, even though it doesn’t come up in conversation very often. Fiber is one of the most commonly recommended ways to help with that, and I’ve found it’s a lot easier to actually hit a fiber goal when it’s built into snacks I already want to eat, rather than something I have to remember separately.
Chocolate Protein Balls with Chia Seeds Recipe
A no-bake, high-fiber snack made with almond butter, rolled oats, chia seeds, and cacao powder. Easy to make ahead and grab throughout the week.
Estimated Nutrition (Per Serving, makes 12 balls, 2 balls per serving): Calories: ~180 | Protein: 6–7g | Fiber: 5–6g | Carbs: 16g | Fat: 11g
(Varies depending on almond butter brand and chocolate chips used.)
Ingredients
- 1 cup rolled oats (certified gluten-free if needed)
- 1/2 cup natural almond butter
- 1/4 cup honey (local, if you can find it)
- 3 tbsp raw cacao powder
- 2 tbsp chia seeds
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- Pinch of fine sea salt
- 1/4 cup dark chocolate chips (Lily’s is my favorite)
Optional Add-Ins
- A scoop of vanilla or chocolate protein powder for an extra protein boost
- 1 tbsp ground flaxseed alongside the chia for even more fiber
- A sprinkle of shredded coconut for rolling
- A pinch of cinnamon for warmth
Instructions
Step 1: Mix the Base
In a large bowl, stir together the rolled oats, almond butter, honey, cacao powder, chia seeds, vanilla extract, and salt until fully combined.
Step 2: Fold in the Chocolate Chips
Stir in the dark chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the mixture.
Step 3: Chill
Refrigerate the mixture for at least 15 minutes to firm it up and make it easier to roll.
Step 4: Roll into Balls
Scoop about a tablespoon of the mixture at a time and roll between your palms into balls, roughly 1 inch in size.
Step 5: Store
Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week, or in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Optional Protein Boost
Want to push these higher in protein? Add a scoop of your favorite vanilla or chocolate protein powder to the base mixture, and add a splash more honey or a tablespoon of milk if the mixture gets too dry to roll.
A Few Easy Tweaks
- No almond butter on hand? Peanut butter or cashew butter both work well
- Make these nut-free by using sunflower seed butter instead
- Want them less sweet? Cut the honey down to 3 tablespoons
- Roll the finished balls in extra cacao powder or shredded coconut for a different finish
Hope these become your new go-to grab-and-go snack, too.
